Janet K. Kempf, Ph.D., LPC, ATR-BC, NCC is a licensed professional counselor, registered and board-certified art therapist, and Assistant Professor and Clinical Internship Coordinator in the Counseling and Art Therapy Program at the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University.

Janet earned Ph.D. in Counselor Education at The University of Toledo, a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, with a certificate in Substance Use Counseling, from Union Institute, and University and a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from the University of Louisville.

As a counselor, Janet has worked with a variety of populations including seeing adults in both outpatient community mental health and private practice settings and leading a breast cancer support group. Prior to joining the faculty at ODU, she taught undergraduate students with a focus in substance use treatment and graduate counseling skills and psychopathology. She presently teaches the Theories of Human Psychological Development, Psychopathology, Group Counseling & Psychotherapy, and Research Methods & Program Evaluation courses. In the past she served the profession on a state level as a board member of the Ohio Association of Counselor Education and Supervision and Northwest Ohio Counselor Association. On a national level, Janet is a member of the American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling, and the Association for Creativity in Counseling. She is also a member of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and the Virginia Counseling Association. Janet has published research in the Journal of Counseling Development and Counselor Education and Supervision.

As an art therapist, Janet began her career working with children and adolescents in both outpatient and inpatient treatment settings. Most of her art therapy career she led groups with adults on an inpatient behavioral health unit. She also worked for over 20 years with older adults in a retirement community engaging in individual and group art therapy. Prior to her current position, she taught undergraduate pre-art therapy courses and engaged with students seeking art engagement opportunities. She has served in a variety of leadership capacities with the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education. Presently, she serves as a director on the Art Therapy Credentials Board and is a member of the Virginia Art Therapy Association social media committee. She is a member of the American Art Therapy Association and regularly presents at their conferences. In addition, Janet has had research published in Art Therapy: The Journal of the American Art Therapy Association.
