Who should see an ophthalmologist?

Ask your doctor for a referral if you:

Are a diabetic patient that requires yearly examinations
Have a family history of eye disease (glaucoma, macular degeneration/etc.)
Are an older patient with visual complaints to evaluate for cataracts:
- Difficulty with night vision/driving
- Difficulty reading
All sickle cell patients, especially sickle cell disease
Have signs of eye infection refractive to treatment or atypical in presentation
Are diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA),rheumatoid arthritis (RA), sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease or other rheumatologic diseases to screen for uveitis
Those who use ethambutol or Plaquenil and require baseline and ongoing screening examinations
Have visual complaints such as flashes, dimming of vision or missing part of the visual field require urgent evaluation to rule out retinal detachment
